Jimmy Harrison, an inspiration to any young sports person, celebrates his 50th birthday on July 27.

To mark the occasion, he is treating himself to a bout against Robbie Clay jnr three days later at Arun Leisure Centre.

Watching him train is special. In the past 12 weeks he has been in the gym sparring most days. He has a routine almost anybody of any age would struggle with, losing two-and-a-half stone since starting training to get down to the correct weight.

Harrison started boxing aged 11 in Battersea. He had 80 amateur fights and won 58 and lost 22.

He was a junior ABA finalist and boxed for Young England twice, and was a Young England captain.

Harrison turned pro at 18, had 22 fights and won 18 of them. He was at one stage rated sixth in Britain in the light welterweight division.

Tickets are £20 and are available from VK Gym in Durban Road or call on 01243 862279. There are about ten fights on the bill.
