Chichester bowlers are history-makers

They did so by beating Aldingbourne by a thoroughly convincing margin - 123-43 - in the final.

In addition to the PC Cup, Chichester have won the West Sussex League division-one title by 21 points and – for the fourth time in five years – the County Double Fours for the Abergavenny Cup.

The same-season treble has never been achieved in the club’s long history. It will be very difficult to repeat, but the club say they will do their best in 2017.

Chichester 123 Cosham 62

Chichester added to their collection of silverware when they defeated Cosham at home to retain the Barry Luff Trophy. They took the lead on the fourth end and never looked back, winning with almost double their opponents’ score.

Chichester 41 Bognor Beavers 12

Chichester entertained Bognor Beavers in a fun two-rink match and won comfortably.

WEST DEAN

The last competitive tournament of the season for West Dean members, a spoon drive, resulted in a win for Jim and Pam Sharrod with a total of 24 shots.

Other scores: Tony Boxall and Bob Holman 19 shots; John Jones and Pam Patterson 19; John Butterworth and Ian Morrison 16; David Harding and Ann Hiscock 16; Andy Wood and John Elliott 15.

SOUTHBOURNE

Southbourne had a successful end-of-summer-season triples competition. Twenty-four bowlers were divided into eight drawn triples. Each triple played three matches of seven ends.

The top four triples took part in semi-finals and a final.

Congratulations go to the winners of the final, Kathy Shelley, Len Mates and Mark Soper (skip) and to the runners-up Colin Bulbeck, Peter Garrard and Andy Smith (skip).

The competition was sponsored by Dave Walter, MD of Agricultural Industrial Components Ltd, who also presented the trophies and prizes.

* The Southbourne BC Polar Bears are inviting members of other local bowls clubs to their winter bowling sessions.

The two-hour roll-ups are on Mondays and Fridays starting at 10am, starting on September 26. The cost is £2.50 to include a cup of tea or coffee at half-time.

Witterings were outplayed by Chichester in this friendly.

Witterings 21 Hotham 42

Witterings lost by 21 shots in the BM League. Hotham took all six points.

Crablands hosted Walton-on-Thames BC in an annual friendly and lost 109-98.

Scores: D Muncey, J Saunders and J Adams won 19-14; D. Jonas, J Taylor, N Reynolds and I Ford won 19-16; E Sadler, F Carrie and D Adams won 17-15; S Gray, R Green, J Tyrrell and A Bateman lost 22-21; J Green, R Shambrook and M Heasman lost 16-9; P Osborn, B Berry and T Dade lost 26-13.

Crablands hosted Marine Gardens in a friendly and won 89-64.

Scores: C Smith, L Tuck, L Lewendon and R Shambrook won 37-7; C Lewendon, F Carrie, A Humphreys and R Humphrey won 24-14; E Willcocks, E Brooker, J Taylor and M Back lost 19-16; R Green, K Palin, B Berry and C Ruler lost 24-12.

MIDHURST

In their final friendly of the season, Midhurst entertained Goring Manor and won by 12 shots.

Scores: Delphine Clark, Roy Ralph & Gerald Dixon won 29-10; Jean Adams, Malcolm Hutchings & Dave King won 26-14; Alan Ricketts, Howard Seymore & Margaret Sole won 19-11; Sue Ralph, Peter West & Phil Wells lost 30-3.

The club held their annual captain’s barbecue and the Ron Petty Cup, which had been cancelled earlier in the season in wet weather. Thirty-two members in eight teams played in a round-robin and Paul Chuter, Phil Kingswell, Corina Pearce and Delphine Clark were the winners.

INDDOR SCENE

The West Sussex premier and A teams both opened their seasons at home to local rivals East Sussex.

The premier team started by winning three of the four games in the first session and all four in the second to lead 14-2 at lunch. They won all four games in the third session and three in the final session for a very satisfying win 36-4 and by 248-134 in shots.

In the singles Infinity’s Chris Page won 15-10 and 12-10 and club-mate Jack Rollings won 14-12 and 21-4. In the pairs The Martlets’ Chris Blackman with Infinity’s Dan Blackman lost 16-12 and won 27-8.

In the triples, Crablands Joyce Abel won 15-11 and 12-7 while the Southbourne pair of Karen and Dave Alner with Lavant’s Peter Winter won 9-7 and 23-6.

In the fours Lavant’s Jackie Lee and Peter Whale with Infinity’s Denise Kirby won 17-4 and lost 9-7 while in the other four the Martlets Freddie Kaucher with Southbourne’s Robin Armstrong won 13-10 and 18-3.

The A team also dominated. They won three games in the first session and all four in the second to lead 14-2 at lunch. In the afternoon they won all four in the third session and three in the final session for a win by 36-4 and 272-118.

In the singles Bognor’s Brian Mills, in his first game as captain, won 20-3 and 23-7. In the pairs Bognor’s David Stansmore and Clive Andrews won 23-6 and 24-7.

In the triples Bognor’s Marlene Steel won 15-5 and lost 5-15 while in the other triple Bognor’s Pam Andrews won 16-5 and 17-7.

In the fours Southbourne’s Andy Smith won 13-6 and 10-7 and in the other four Bognor’s Gareth Morgan with Lavant’s Terry Haigh won 17-4 and 14-7.

With five players in the side making their debut for the county this was a particularly satisfying result.
