Golf: Winning start for new Chichester ladies' captain

Their opponents on the Cathedral course were The Dyke and Chichester recorded an opening-game win of 5-2.

The team comprised Jane Buckley, Heddie Straw (capt), Pauline Beale, Nicky Eastland, Terry Payne, Marilyn Forward and Lynne Plowman.

Meanwhile, Chichester’s Nicky Eastland and Bev Seymour won in the first round of the Daily Mail foursomes against Hill Barn, beating their opponents at Hill Barn 6&5.

Fifty-three veterans turned out on a sunny morning for a Stableford qualifier but one golfer had a round to remember. Lawrie Pirie topped the list with 45 points. His 20 points on the front nine could have been better as he had a blip on the second, but he made no mistakes on the back nine, scoring an impressive 25 points.

Not satisfied, with just winning the competition, Pirie also bagged a bottle of wine for nearest-the-pin on the 13th.

It was a good day for category four as the first four in this group all had more points than the lower handicap group.

Prizes were awarded for the first five in each category.

COWDRAY PARK

Thirty-six Cowdray ladies played in the captain-versus-vice-captain’s match.

Playing in pairs the format was four-ball better-ball matchplay. The weather was marvellous and the course playing well. The captain’s Red Army reigned victorious over the vice-captain’s Green Army with a 6-3 win. Golf was followed by a buffet lunch of jacket potatoes with various fillings. Everyone enjoyed the day.

* It was the ladies’ turn to host the ladies and seniors’ four-ball better-ball event and 36 pairs took part on a cold but bright morning.

Carolyn Scott and Mike Burgess were unstoppable, coming in with an amazing 46 points. Pauline Lamb and Tony Sapsworth were second with 42 and Sue Brown and Dave Tilley third with 41.

As always it was an enjoyable event.

Cowdray Park seniors played their first inter-club match of the year, away at Blackmoor, without their ailing captain John Doran.

Into his place stepped Mike Cardiff to lead the troops while partnering seniors’ captain Mike Hughes in the match.

Blackmoor have had quite a problem recently with badgers tearing up the fairways, which made quite a sight.

Cowdray’s lead pair had a close match with their counterparts but were edged out 2&1 at the finish. The very strong pairing of Jon Fife and Paul Owen overcame the concession of many shots to win one up to level matters.

Following another win for the home side, the visitors took the lead with two wins, but were unable to sustain it and lost the match 4½-3½.

GOODWOOD

England will field two top teams in the European Nations Cup at Sotogrande in Spain next Wednesday – and Goodwood’s Marco Penge is in the men’s side.

The 18-year-old will join Dan Brown, Alfie Plant and Jack Singh Brar to aim for England’s seventh win in the men’s event and regain the trophy last won in 2015.

Penge, an ambassador at Golf at Goodwood, is knocking on the door of a big win having been runner-up in both the New South Wales amateur and the Spanish amateur championships in recent weeks. Last season he tied for the French amateur before being pipped in a play-off.
