Chichester Falcons Softball Club won back-to-back matches in the UPSU Indoor League, taking all the points in two gritty encounters at the Spinnaker Sports Centre.

First up were UPSA Shafters Black, a new side formed of university freshers, who won the toss to field first.

The Falcons hit well through the first innings, with Clive Janes pounding his first of three home runs into the back wall, while Dave Morris’ pace running the bases helped put eight runs on the board.

In the field, the Falcons first female pitcher, Lucy Morris, stepped up and proceeded to strike out almost an entire postcode, retiring nine batters before any of the Shafters could get on base.

Nevertheless the university rookies picked up and hit well to level up the scores at the end of the first, despite a solid performance from Sam McGann at second base.

The second innings brought more infield mayhem as the Shafters could not contain the Falcons’ determination to reach extra bases with each hit. Again, the Shafters matched them with effort and good sportsmanship with the game ending 13-12 to the Falcons.

The next fixture saw Baffins Brewers line up with a few guests from local team Solent Sluggers.

The Falcons fielded first, this time with Dave Piesse pitching his first game, and he took command of proceedings with his curveball, while debutant Mark Allen mopped up at right field.

The Brewers hit hard but Amelia Peachment got her glove to a bullet to left-centre to deny their shortstop a base hit, while Clive Janes pulled off arguably the play of the afternoon with an unassisted double play, by recovering from a dropped catch to slap a tag on to two forced runners between third and second base.

More home runs followed as the Falcons batted their way through the game, executing squeeze plays with precision and leaving the first innings 9-7 ahead.

The Brewers were restricted to just three runs in the second thanks to a series of Herculean catches from shortstop Matt Tebb, allowing the Falcons to hammer home the required runs to win the game 16-10.
