Dani Thorn from Southbourne Gymnastics Club won silver in her age group at the Sussex championships.

Despite a not-quite-perfect bar routine - she fell on her bottom on her landing - she still finished first on bars.

She continued her success into the Wickers invitational competition, winning silver on beam and gold on vault, bars and overall. She was joined on the medal podium by team-mate Maddie Smith winning bronze on bars, gold on beam and silver on vault and overall. Lottie Horner took bronze on vault, beam and overall.

All the club’s gymnasts came home with medals. Eleanor McKay won silver on vault and bronze on beam and 0.1 of a point ahead of her, Ellie Raffel took the silver.

Issi Ware and Rachel Durham added to the medals they won at the Fareham competiton, taking home eight medals between them, including silver overall for Issi and bronze overall for Rachel.

Tilly Leeming won silver on vault in her age group. Frankie Wright won second on bars, completing perfectly a skill she has been working on really hard, and Bethan Potts won bronze on beam in only her second competition.

The competition was a team event and Southbourne’s squad finished second overall.

With a break in competitions until September, the gymnasts will be working on new skills to include in the higher levels they will move into in the new season.

The total medal haul of this year’s competitions to date has topped 175 so a break from gym to polish the medals is needed.
