Bognor Squash Club’s first team, resuming action in division two west, opened the second half of their season with a visit from league leaders Middleton II, who were unbeaten in 2013.

Unfortunately for the home team, Middleton continued in the same vein, coming away with a 5-0 win. Earlier in the season Bognor had run Middleton close in the reverse match and must have been optimistic at home, but this was not to be.

Bognor No5 was Steve Darlington and despite a good effort to get on level terms in the third game he lost 3-9, 4-9, 7-9 to Ben Morris. Fourth string Justin Scott was out of touch losing in three games to Chris Spedding.

It took Bognor’s Steve Enfield at No3 to get some points on the board and he started well against Paul Elliott taking the first two games 9-2, 9-6, but the visitor came back to win the third 9-5 and there was then a real battle for the rubber with Elliott just having the edge and taking the deciding games 9-7, 9-7.

Bognor’s Glen Peskett at No2 was less successful, losing in straight games to Patrick Colvin, and in the top string match Steve Porter had an encouraging second game to level against Ben Handsford, but the visitor dominated in the next two winning 9-4, 1-9, 9-3, 9-3 to complete the comprehensive win, with Middleton taking 20 points to Bognor’s three.

There is a home match tomorrow (January 24, 7pm) at the Hawthorn Road club when the third team take on Bluecoats Sports Horsham. Visitors are welcome - details on 01243 865462.
