Thirteen gymnasts represented Arun Gymnastics Club at the south-east regional floor and vault championships, where some wonderful performances saw them collect a superb total of seven medals.
In an interesting case of sibling rivalry, twin sisters Betsy and Caitlyn Baird were competing against each other in the advanced category two 2001 births group.
Both girls were on top of their game with Besty placing first on vault and second on floor while Caitlyn was third on floor and second on vault. In an extremely close battle, Betsy took top honours, finishing the overall winner with a well-deserved gold while Caitlyn made it a Baird sister one-two with silver.
Amelia Rishman became another one of Arun’s golden girls when she put in two excellent second-place performances on both floor and vault to come first overall in the category two for 2002 births.
More success followed in the 1997-98 births group thanks to fantastic performances from Jordan Kitchen and Lily Smyth. Both girls put in beautiful floor routines which saw them placed joint first place and, with Charlotte Williamson, they clinched an Arun clean sweep on the vault with Jordan first , Lily second and Charlotte third.
Those fantastic results meant Jordan pipped Lily to overall first place and the gold medal, Lily picked up the silver for second and Charlotte finished overall fourth.
Arun’s final two medalists, Lucy Stephenson-Gill and Chantal Mawbey, were both competing at silver level category one with Lucy in the 12-14 year age group and Chantal in the 15-plus.
Both girls put in excellent performances with Lucy winning overall silver following second place on vault and third on floor and Chantal earning overall bronze following third place on both her vault and floor.
Four Arun gymnasts competed in the advanced category two groups with Rosie Budge competing in the 2004-05 births finishing agonisingly outside the medal places in overall fourth following a fourth-place performance on floor and a third on vault.
In bronze level category one, Emily Day finished in overall seventh in the 1999-2000 births group after starting off with a fantastic first place on vault.
Arun were represented in the category one 2000-and-older births by Rebecca Williamson, Sophie Haines and Jenna Partridge. The girls put in very tidy floor routines which saw Jenna placed second and Sophie fourth, which, combined with their vaults, put Jenna narrowly outside a medal in overall fourth, Sophie in fifth and Rebecca seventh.
Head coach Mandy Hawkins was delighted with all the gymnasts’ efforts.
