New approach to golf coaching catches on at Chichester

Chichester Golf Club have teamed up with the World Golf Teaching Federation (WGTF) for a fresh approach to coaching. Read about this and all the other local golf news in our weekly round-up.

The owners of the Hunston club, part of the Maple Leaf Golf group, decided to bring in WGTF to work with them to shake up the conventional coaching and lessons at their golf academy.

WGTF coach Sean Herron has joined existing PGA pro Mark Rimmer. Herron, from Northern Ireland, has taught golf as far afield as Switzerland and Australia as well as in the UK.

Last year he became one of only 25 coaches in England who can call themselves a 'golfing machine authorised instructor' where physics and basic geometry are applied to simplify the golf stroke.

Programmes are aimed at everybody from beginners to aspiring tour players. The club have ideal facilities for teaching, with a dedicated 'academy hole', a large floodlit driving range including a video analysis studio, two putting greens and a nine-hole par-three short course, as well as two 18-hole courses which cater for all levels of golfer.

Rimmer and Herron are offering free consultations to all, in which a questionnaire and video analysis will tailor a programme to suit individuals.

Beginners can choose a programme of evening lessons aimed at covering the basics, or book to 'learn golf in a day' – an intensive course where you go from beginner to playing on the course in just one day.

Chichester have always had an extensive teaching programme for junior golfers, but now have even more on offer for younger players. Popular open sessions continue.

For adults, there are initiatives such as sessions dedicated to lady golfers, an annual package which includes unlimited lessons for a year, plus skills evenings with prices from just 2 an hour.

To launch the new Chichester Golf Academy, the club are offering places on any of their beginner programmes at a special price of 25 for a six-week course (usual price 49.95) to the first ten Observer series readers to book. Quote "OBSERVER OFFER" when you book.

To book, call the academy on 01243 528999 or call in for a chat with Mark or Sean. More can also be found at www.chichestergolf.com – click on the Chichester golf academy and driving range section.

COWDRAY PARK

Cowdray Park seniors held their most popular event of the year, the Texas Scramble, with a field of 87 reduced by a number of last-minute withdrawals.

Heavy overnight rain softened the course but the seniors had a fine, dry day. The event was superbly organised as usual by Dave Hirons, who set the early pace with Pat Bonner, Dave Wickham and Ray Tucker, setting a very creditable target of 62.4.

This figure remained unchallenged until overtaken by the team of seniors' open champion Ken Marjoram with Roger Poat, Rod Wooldridge and John Butler, with a score of 62.0 to claim first prize, presented by seniors' captain Wally Mitchell.

Playing their 22nd home match of the season, Cowdray Park seniors continued their unbeaten run by defeating Corhampton 6-2.

Team captain Wally Mitchell with partner Derek Smith set another fine example for his team for the second week running with a 5&4 win. This was followed by a 2&1 win from Graham Evans and Alistair Proctor.

The next two matches were claimed by Corhampton but a strong finish from the home side resulted in a win.

Results (Cowdray names first): Wally Mitchell & Derek Smith beat Alan Harnden & Chris Garrod 5&4; Graham Evans & Alistair Proctor beat Brian Harvey & David Searle 2&1; Dave Tilley & Roger Poat lost to Mark Rogers & Roy Chequer 1dn; David Heard & Jim Green beat Geoff Staley & Norman Short 2&1; John Smith & Rod Wooldridge beat David Massey & Mick Barber 3&2; John Start & Tony Castley lost to John Beardall & Tony Hall 4&2; David Laver & Terry Moran beat Peter Langrish & Dave Western 2&1; Dave Wickham & George Crouch beat Keith Waldron & Tony Eley 3&2;

n Graham Evans extended his lead at the top of the Cowdray Park seniors' Eclectic table with a timely two-shot improvement to 54.5. Nearest challengers remain Dave Hirons and Mike Burgess.

Significant advances were made by Barry Overington (25th to eighth) and Mick Nobes (28th to 11th), but they are still some way behind the leaders. Evans has reduced the lead of Phil Harrison at the head of the Carter Trophy leaderboard and is reaping the reward for his consistency in competitions.
