From orange to green - but this is tennis, not traffic lights
Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club hosted a ten-and-under mini master county tour tournament.
It was the latest in a series of junior tennis tournaments which are scheduled to be held in the club’s Dome during the winter.
Mini tennis green is a great way for players to continue their progress from mini tennis orange. It’s played on a full-size tennis court, with bigger rackets and balls which are a little softer than yellow balls. It’s the next stage before moving on to full-compression yellow balls on a full-size court and helps players on all aspects of their game.
The green-ball event was run using a compass draw format of eight players, meaning each competitor was guaranteed three matches, with each match being the best of three short sets to four games and a match tie-break for the third set.
It was a great day for local players. In the main final Daniel McKitterick (Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club) beat Eliot Glaysher (Elstead Village TC) 4-0, 4-2 in a high-quality match.
In the back-draw final Chichester’s Noah Burton beat Jed Barker of Virgin Active Brighton Health & Racquets Club 4-0, 4-0.
Tournament organiser Peter Cook said: “It is very encouraging to see so many juniors from the Chichester club competing regularly and doing so well against players from Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire.
“The club welcome and encourage these young budding tennis players, who have not played at our club before, to come and enjoy our tournaments.
“We actively promote mini and junior tennis and a programme of tournaments and coaching, for all age groups, is also scheduled for this year.”
