Hockey: Middleton p-p-pick up a p-p-point

A last-minute goal saw Middleton clinch a 3-3 draw away to Penguins, who turned around a 2-0 deficit after half-time.
Colvin, Atkins and captain Pullen were the scorers in a topsy-turvy game.
Middleton & Bognor went into the game in high spirits after last week’s 7-1 demolition of East Grinstead and immediately took a firm hold.
The first half provided many opportunities for the visitors and they took the lead early in the first half.
Patient build-up play has become synonymous with Middleton’s recent run of form. This week was no different as two first-half goals gave the visitors a huge advantage at the break.
The second half was completely different as a change of tactics from the home side meant Middleton were under siege in their half.
The visitors failed to cope with the addition of an extra attacker and this became evident as the Penguins scored two early second-half goals.
After six consecutive penalty corners the Penguins took the lead with five minutes left.
But Middleton never gave up and the last play of the game saw the visitors score to finish a thriller 3-3.
Trinity Mid-Whitgifitans 1
Chichester II 0
Chichester suffered a disappointing loss.
The first half saw the sides have an equal amount of possession without creating any clear-cut chances.
Strudwick went closest when he almost got a touch to a ball crashed into the D.
In the second half Trinity took the lead from a penalty stroke in their only shot on goal in the second half.
Chichester were down to nine men after Baxter and Gotham received unnecessary yellow cards.
Trinity failed to take advantage, and back up to 11, Chichester laid siege to the opposition goal, but good keeping and poor decision-making and finishing meant Trinity held on.
Chichester remain top and this week entertain Trojans.
Centurions 4 Honeybees 1
Ladies’ Sussex League
Centurions were buzzing after beating the Honeybees.
Louise Harris and Nicki Williams set up Anna Pordage for the opener.
Honeybees were quick to respond and were awarded a long corner, but the Centurions defence were strong and worked hard to keep out Honeybees.
Williams supplied Louise Thew with an excellent pass, which led to Thew making it 2-0. But Honeybees successfully converted a short corner before half-time.
In the second half Lisa Proctor blocked many Honeybees attacks and Debbie Brown pushed the ball up the left wing.
Claire Mealing scored from a well-executed shot. Harris’ work in midfield led to a chance for Thew, who was fouled and awarded a penalty stroke. Thew slipped it past the keeper with ease.

Eastbourne II 2 Chichester Priory Park Ladies II 1
Chichester knew their clash at Eastbourne was going to be tough – especially after losing to top side Worthing.
Chichester started sluggishly and couldn’t seem to lift their game.
Through a dubious decision from the umpire, Eastbourne were awarded a short corner from which they scored. Chichester put together great passing moves and were soon in Eastbourne’s circle and were rewarded with a short corner. This was well worked by Marks pushing out and Chaplin and Thew combining well for Thew to score.
In the second half Chichester were brighter and put the home side under pressure and had more chances to go in front. The home side broke through Chichester’s defence and scored the winner.

Haslemere started the brighter but had nothing to show for a succession of penalty corners.
Chichester went ahead, Michael Simmonds retrieving the ball when Haslemere cleared a penalty corner and passing into the area before Ashley Simmonds fired across goal for Macey to tap in.
In the second period Chichester picked up a second when good work from Durrant, Macey and Whittle set up MacCartin for his sixth of the season.
Chichester almost scored a third when Ashley Simmonds fierce reverse hit was knocked on to the post with Blanks unable to convert the rebound.

Chichester Chipmunks 6 South Saxons III 1
Chichester bounced back from the previous week’s disappointment to secure a fine win against their opposition from Hastings.
Lowther was on sparkling form to record a fine first-half hat-trick from the left of the attack. The second goal in particular was impressive.
The second half saw Chichester press before a defensive lapse allowed a Saxons forward to lose his man and strike home.
A string of corners led to Hindmarsh, who had been denied in the first half, smashing home a corner.
Chichester moved Procter to the frontline and after swift movement down the left the ball was crossed to him to classily slot home. Chichester were convincing winners.
St Francis 2
Chichester Cherubs 0
The Cherubs travelled to Burgess Hill and were still asleep when league leaders St Francis scored the first goal after seven minutes.
Guest player Ben Palmer helped to marshal the midfield of Woodruff, Hutchings and his brother James. But the superior skills of the Chichester team were outgunned by the strength and physicality of the larger home team.
Gibbons and Robson ran tirelessly up front and Shaw was a constant threat but the keeper could not be beaten.
Newton-Young played well in the Chichester goal. Donaldson offered threats down the left and Stemp on the right.
Despite the efforts of Hayward and a much better second half, Chichester weren’t able to capitalise on their possession.
