SUNDAY’S meeting at Fontwell has been abandoned because of waterlogging.
An inspection on Thursday afternoon was called in the light of a forecast for more rain and hopes were slim at that stage.
Further rain during the day meant officials had no choice but to call off racing - meaning the track has lost both its scheduled meetings so far this year to the weather.
Officials said due waterlogging and ‘false ground’ meant they had no choice. There’s been 366mm rain at the site since December 14 and a further 20-30mm is expected up to and on Sunday.
Punters last saw racing at Fontwell on Boxing Day and will now have to wait and hope for better weather ahead of the next card on Thursday, February 13.
Clerk of the course Ed Arkell said: “We’ve called it early and it was an easy decision. We’ve had a further two millimetres this afternoon and another inch is forecast over the weekend.
“We really had no option. Our next meeting is February 13 so hopefully we get a few dry days before then.”
