Rocks youngsters fail to seize chance

Rocks boss Mick Jenkins was left unimpressed by his team of youngsters in a 1-0 win against Gosport Borough on Tuesday.

Bognor edged past the Southern League side with their first pre-season win at the third attempt.

It was a chance for some of the younger players to impress and possibly earn a deal at Nyewood Lane, but Jenkins was far from happy with the performance.

"I was disappointed," he said. "Not many of them stood out.

"If that's their desire to want to earn a deal, then I'm disappointed. They showed a lack of quality, lack of desire and lack of enthusiasm.

"You come here and look at that pitch, how can you not want to perform out there? It's not good enough for me, I wont tolerate that.

"We have got to be ready for August 9, and looking at that match some of them are just not up to it."

The first half finished goalless, as neither side created a clear-cut chance.

Bognor's most meaningful chance fell to Ryan Hirooka, who hooked a volley wide on 22 minutes.

Gosport should have taken the lead on the hour mark as Nathan Lynch beat the offside trap to break free on the left, but Tom Taylor in the Bognor goal saved the shot with his legs.

Bognor grabbed the only goal of the game two minutes later, when Gosport's Michael White turned in Michael McEnery's cross which was meant for Chris Clark.

With ten minutes to go the Rocks should have doubled their lead, when from a corner, Sam Pearce shot against the crossbar and from the rebound Alex Ward headed over from close range.
