Selsey have a new kid on the Block

Gary Block is the new boss of Selsey FC.

The ex-Pagham manager moves to the High Street Ground after a short spell at troubled Midhurst, and will have former Selsey reserve boss Ian Martin as his coach.

Block was linked with the job in the Observer last week.

A Selsey statement said: "The club have listened very carefully to what the spectators want, what the players thoughts are, and how would be the best way to take the club forward after Danny Hinshelwood's resignation.

"Selsey FC have a long and proud tradition of doing things in the correct way and is mindful of keeping this tradition going. The chairman and committee are unanimous in their decision, and are confident that the new management team will move the club in the right direction."

Club chairman David Lee said: "Gary has been manager at both Midhurst and Pagham and while he had only been at Midhurst for a very short time you could see, straight away, that he was very capable of turning things around for them.

"Before he stepped down as manager of Pagham last year, they were top of division one and looked a side that were capable of challenging for honours.

"Ian has been our reserve team coach for about seven or eight years, and has seen them promoted to the reserve section premier division where we maintain a mid table position.

"Ian has a great knowledge of the game, is very tactically aware and likes to see his side play football. I am sure that with both Gary and Ian at the helm, the club can build on its very strong base and will continue to develop in the right way. I wish them both well".

The pair's first game in charge is in the John O'Hara League Cup at Peacehaven this coming Saturday, as the midweek game against Mile Oak has now been postponed.

The club have put Bernie Morey and Dickie Isted in temporary charge of the reserve team and will now be seeking to make a permanent appointment.

All enquiries regarding the vacant position should be addressed to David Lee, c/o 68 High Street, Selsey, or on 01243 604465 or 07867 508223.
