Selsey prove they're up to the mark

Selsey Golf Club embarked upon the GolfMark award and ClubMark accreditation scheme in the summer of 2007 and following a great deal of hard work, has achieved the award.

Andy Willems, the EGU/ELGA regional development officer, complimented the club on their attitude and support for junior golf and made particular reference to the hard work, dedication and co-operation of Penny Hesp and Vince Trump.

The award is the culmination of nine months of preparation of documents and reports, attendance at training seminars and an audit.

The club have a solid base that has provided a warm and friendly club environment for men's, ladies' and senior golf over the past 100 years.

To safeguard the future of the club, a greater emphasis on junior golf was encouraged by professional Peter Grindley, junior girls' organiser Penny Hesp and overall junior organiser Simon Aspital, creating an environment that provides first-class opportunities for juniors in terms of playing and coaching, the club environment and child protection policies.

* After winning the stableford competition during the week in atrocious conditions, Tom Aspital was delighted to see the weather much improved for his junior captain's day.

Supported by the main club, veterans and ladies and in teams of three, they covered the golf course for a shotgun start.

Best two stableford scores were taken on each hole to win the team prize, resulting in 86 winning points for Tex Cates, Simon Aspital and son Billy.

Some 47 points were contributed by ten-year-old Billy Aspital, making him the overall individual junior winner too. Denny Terrry and Henry Leo won nearest the pin on two short holes.

Winner in the veterans' qualifying round for the Max Faulkner Jug in October was Pete Terry (gross 92, nett 77). Runner-up was Julien Lindsey–Clark (gross 98, nett 80).

Also going through to play for the jug from the main club is Rob Hollands. The overall winner of the medal round was Nigel Hillier (gross 79, nett 63).

CHICHESTER

The club's veterans pulled off an overwhelming home victory against their near neighbours Selsey, winning 6-0.

Result (Chichester names first): D Gilder & D Caple-Smith beat D Errett & H Newman 4&3; D Imlach & R Stainsby beat T Terry & B Mariner 3&2; K Jackson & I Hollow beat M Russell & G Wood 2 up; B Dolton & D Blythe beat R Sleet & D Wilgoss 8&6; M Beer & J Paul beat N Osborn & D Tindale 6&5; V Gibbons & A Grant beat M Sharpe & J Napper 6&5.

COWDRAY PARK

The Stent Cup and Edwards Cup were played out at Cowdray Park. A total of 47 players took part.

Results: Stent Cup (36-hole stableford): Winner Phil Cummins 78pts, runner-up Paul Dudman 73.

Edwards Cup (best 18-hole stableford): Winner Chris Cummins 39pts, runner-up Chris Robertson 38 (on countback).

Cowdray Park seniors won 4-2 at home to Old Thorns.

Results: Graham Evans & Des White halved against Charlie Crawford & Chris Grimes; Mike Hancock & Ken Young lost 1 down against Ian Joyne & Gordon McKay; Pat Bonner & Eric Hobbs won 3&2 against john Zabell & Pete Pearcy; Peter Hallt & Alan Sibley won 4&3 against Podd Mims & Des Langford; Brian Taylor & Peter Hample won 4&3 against Phil Jordon & Reg Mortimer; Ian Heustice & Bill Brownlee halved against Bruce Moore & Martin Boyce.

Cowdray Park then won 7-1 away to West Surrey Sages.

Results: Keith Chapman & Roy Penrose won 3&2 against Keith Jacobs & Brian Marsh; Terry Moran & Dave Gaff won 4&3 against Mike Hall

& John Wybrew; Tony Casterly & Phill Morris lost 3&1 to Ahmed Abdullah & Peter Vince; David Heard & Mel Milburn won 1 up against John Taskes & Colin Clarke; Rod Wooldridge & Ron Bridgeman won 5&4 against Norman Crofts & Matt Hall; Pat Bonner & John Newman lost 1 down to Dennis Luxford & John Capstick; Ken Newberry & Richard Keep won 3&1 against Arthur Gay & John Davenport; Alan Godfree & Richard Hodgson lost 5&4 to Ian Smith & David Messer.
