Seniors' golf invite is too good to turn down
Here's all the news from Bognor, Chichester and Selsey golf clubs in our latest round-up of goings-on on the local greens.
BOGNOR
One of the most popular annual events at Bognor Golf Club is the seniors' invitation.
It is invariably over-subscribed and this year had to be restricted to 48 members and their 48 guests, from 30 different clubs as far afield as Chipping Norton, Newmarket, Torquay and Weybridge.
Club president Bill Chick and Ron Allcott were, as usual, efficient organisers of the four-ball better-ball stableford competition.
The winners were JJ Stephenson and Bruce Maskell, from Surbiton, with an excellent score of 45 points.
Second were Alan Cramp and John Hyslop, Pyecombe, with 42, on countback from Adrian Smith and Gerry Beadle, Torquay.
They were third on countback from Bill Houlton and George Cawte from Selsey, who in turn were ahead of Garry Steventon and Geoff Dawes (Goodwood), also on countback.
Bognor veterans had a 6-1 home win against Chichester.

A ladies' and veterans' mixed team lost 6-2 at West Chiltington.
Results: G & C Kitt lost to M Richards & A Evans 4&3, D Stoner & J Phillmore halved with P Roberts & E Hunt, A & D Rumsby lost to L Williams & M Turner 3&2, B Poston & P Littlejohns lost to R Burden & M Roberts 4&2, B & J Green halved with A Kidd & R Lauder, L & Y Hazael lost to T Radbourne & G King 5&4, D & A Coupe lost to L Philby & A Huddlestone 5&4, J King & P Rishman beat P Migdale & E Rowlands 2&1.
At Singing Hills, Bognor veterans lost 5-2.

At 5.30am, 32 early birds took part in a sponsored game in the Mid-Summer Madness Charity Cup.
The idea came from a game at Goodwood years ago and was resurrected by Derek House, who also suppled the winners' trophy.
It was a beautiful morning and the format was bogey ball, with three out of four scores to count.
Winners with a score of 96 were club captain Paul Irish, Pat Irish, R Hendrick and S Hendrick.
Players enjoyed a champagne breakfast followed by prizegiving in the clubhouse. Joining them were John and Pamela Farrington from Cobnor Chairboat charity.
They run an adapted boat that can take wheelchair passengers plus carers for a trip around Chichester harbour. The players raised 1,000.
Bognor hope to make this a yearly competition and are hoping more players take part next year.
* Bognor ladies held a stableford competition for the Elliott Methusala Trophy. The winner was M Flynn.
Results: Silver: 1 A Chandler 41pts, 2 B Samuels 39, 3 T Byrne 37(ocb). Bronze A: 1 M Flynn 39, 2 S Hendrick 38, 3 B Smallcorn 35. Bronze B: 1 K Walker 43, 2 J Eder 38, 3 E Morris 34. Veterans: 1 B Payne 37, 2 A Coupe 33, 3 M Hardy 29pts (ocb).
SELSEY
The veterans' section held their Invitation Day competition.
A total of 64 competitors took part, comprising 16 teams from West Sussex and Hampshire clubs plus a Selsey player with each team.
There was light rain and strong winds for most of the game before the rain became heavy, ending in a cloudburst, thunder and lightning – but by this time all the players were safely in the club house.
The winning team from Avisford Park, David Feist, Peter Redford and Brian Rogers, scored 95 points. Second were the team from Chichester GC – Brian Burn, David Imlach and Robert Holcroft, with 90 points after countback.
Individual winners: Division 1: Brian Burn, Chichester, 37; Division 2: Paul Boughton, Selsey, 37; Division 3 and overall winner: Mike Russell, Selsey, 39.
CHICHESTER
Chichester vets played Ifield in the Gilbert Print Plate second round, but lost 2-1. It was a close match against the winners of the trophy last year and two matches were decided on the 18th green.
Chichester vets romped home in gale-force conditions against Slinfold Park – the result 7-.
There were excellent results from Rob Baldwin and David Blythe, who beat their opponents 8&7.
