Success for city's squash stars - but now they need backers

Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club hosted and played in the Hampshire Squash Summer League semi-finals – and the home team's dazzling display against LA Fitness from Salisbury saw them to the final.

Zoe Shardlow, an ex-British junior champion and playing at No5 string, showed glimpses of her old touch and won the first match in straight games.

Playing at No3, Miles Davy took on the British over-60 champion Barry Featherstone.

Davy, at the top of his game, showed no mercy and delivered an overwhelming 15-14, 15-9, 15-5 win.

Claire Briance, at No4, made a nervous start but fought her way through to win in the fifth. That made it 3-0 to Chichester and secured a final berth.

Team captain Mike Phillips faced a former British-ranked junior.

Phillips produced a workmanlike performance to win 3-1 and make it 4-0.

Michael Jordan struggled with consistency of play but in the end still proved too strong for his opponent and came through to win 3-1 and complete the well-deserved clean sweep.

Chichester's 5-0 victory sent out a chilling message to Nuffield Portsmouth, who defeated Trojans Southampton 3-2 in the other semi-final.

Since 1995, Chichester has hosted a Premier Squash League team, giving locals and those further afield the chance to watch top international players. There cannot be many other sports offering this opportunity locally but a lack of TV coverage means squash remains unknown to many.

Chichester Racquets & Fitness Club, who host the venue for the Premier Squash League matches in the heart of the city, desperately need sponsorship if matches are to remain in Chichester. The season starts in October.

Benefits to sponsors are to have the team named after your company, national and local publicity, a company logo on all material, including players' shirts and the England Squash website. Associate sponsorship is also available.

If you or your company can help, call the club on 01243 785664, e-mail manager@crafc.co.uk or visit www.crafc.co.uk
