Talking Sport No 8

Our columnist Dean Adams has his say on the latest big news to emerge from Nyewood Lane.

Well, it's not often I have scrapped a column the night before publication to completely re-write another one.

But the news at Nyewood Lane today needed discussing to the point where I immediately put down my pen - as with the cheese and cucumber sandwich - and got typing.

As reported in the Observer, what an exclusive! And I for one, think the news is wonderful for the club.

Andy Awford was a committed and loyal defender in his day for Pompey and I think he and Mick Jenkins could be brilliant for the club.

The financial side of the deal has not sunk in yet - maybe that's just my age - but I don't want to talk about that anyway. Let's talk about football - for now.

Both Andy and Mick are 'football people' and I think this appointment by the club is the right one.

Some will see the appointment of Mick as a sour one, considering it is pretty common knowledge Michael Birmingham wanted to leave the club if he became involved.

I have nothing but respect for Birmingham and he was a brilliant, loyal servant to the club for many years and he will never be forgotten, but he has now moved on, time has moved on and it's now time for some of the fans to do the same.

This is a new beginning and there is fresh opportunity. It feels good.

Jenkins deserves his chance, money has been put in and he is a man with good local contacts in the game.

I hope every supporter of this great club can get behind the new management team so we are all swimming in the same direction.

Time will tell, but I am sure both Andy and Mick will do a very good job.

I am certainly looking forward to the new season with interest now.

Things had gone stale a little, but today I felt some new energy.
