The future's bright - not orange - for Jacob
YOUNG Jacob Woodward is a rising star of the local judo scene.
Now 11, the Bognor Regis Community College pupil has been practising the martial art since he was five.
And he has just returned from an international adventure.
Jacob has been going from strength to strength and in 2007 he came second in a national tournament in Hereford.
His successes and hard work in training with the three local clubs he is affiliated to – the Kayu-shin Do Club in Bognor, Tony Newton's club at Chichester University and the Samurai club in Southampton – earned him a place in the southern England line-up who travelled to Dunkirk to take on rivals from a number of different countries.
Jacob was the only junior to win a fight in his weight group.
The trip also gave Jacob, who lives in Felpham, the chance to spar with a French ace who has won an Olympic silver medal.
His proud dad John said: "Jacob trains three to five nights a week and is very committed to judo.
"He is an orange belt at the moment but his next aim is to become a green.
"He trains hard and right from the start, it was obvious he had a real talent for it. Now we're looking forward to seeing what happens next."
