Tides are vital for club's tankard contest
The River Arun at Petworth & Bognor Angling Club's water at Watersfield was in good condition with little tidal flow of floating vegitation for the club's Charles Tankard.
Most matches on the river are held on a falling tide, but this time the match was fished either side of high tide, which brought its rewards.
First place went to Mick Greenway, who bagged up a good 6lb 3oz, with roach caught trotting with a stick float, while match secretary Steve Simmonds was second with 5lb 9oz, again trotting below the outlet.
Mark Pantling was third with another mixed bag of roach, dace and small perch.
For leisure anglers, the Arun is fishing really well at the moment. Eels seem to take nearly everything on offer, while not welcomed by most anglers eels are highly protected and must be returned immediately to the water.
Certainly during the summer, float trotting seems to be most rewarding. Roach, dace and perch have all been caught recently, mostly on maggot, while sweetcorn and bread have found the bream – a fish that thrives in the Arun and very different from lake bream.
Hook an Arun bream and not only will it put up a good fight but can be a sizeable catch. Bream have also been caught of late from the Rother at Coultershaw and Coates Castle, which also has a good head of roach and dace with the occasional carp showing.
The whole river would benefit from a few days' rain.
Unlike the Arun, the Rother depends on rainfall so despite a recent downpour the river remains low. Likewise the ponds at Walberton and Storrington, where work will shortly commence to deepen and clear the middle carp lake.
The Hunston Lane fishery will need to close for a couple of weeks during this work and members are asked to go to www.sussexangling.co.uk, where further information will be available once we have firm dates.
