Till cashes in to take centenarian Jack's prize

Sixty members of the veterans' section at Bognor took part in the annual Jack Lemmer Trophy.

The winner was Trevor Till with 42 points, while second was Ian Kracke on 40.

Division one was won by Ian Simpson with 37 on countback from Doug Develin and Bob Taylor.

Derek Sheath won division two with 37 points on countback from Mike Wadley, with Jim Barker third on 36.

Jack Lemmer, looking forward to his 103rd birthday later this year, was at the lunch and as usual his jokes caused great hilarity.

He has been a member of the club since 1967.

This competition also counts as the third qualifying round of the Fletcher Trophy, with the final to be played later this year.

The leading qualifiers are now Richard Hedge with 44 points, Bob Green on 36, Trevor Till on 36 and Paul Irish on 35.

* The veterans' section drew 4-4 at Rowlands Castle. It was the second occasion in recent away matches when the partnership of Clive Millett and Bryan Kingswell have won 7&6.

Results (Bognor names first): J Woodhead & D Turner lost to B French & N Henry 5&4, G Stevenson & J Morris halved with F Cameron & G Kirk, J Wyatt & D Burke lost to C Marshall & M Fibbins 8&6, D Hamlett & K Setchell lost to D Young & R Summers 5&3, J Owen & A Drysdale halved with G Griffiths & R Mercer, C Millett & B Kingswell beat M Blake & P Luscombe 7&6, B Bennett & D Sheath beat D Cowper and G Campbell 5&4, P Collins & B Baylis beat C Grennan & C Hooper 3&2.

* At their annual match last week the club achieved a rare victory 3-2 over a strong team from Sussex Police.

Results (Bognor names first): C Martin & J Meek halved with G & A Cross, D Stoner & D Corbett lost to D & T Rae, P Lott & P Collins beat P Crossley & B Innes, F Keen & G Halliday beat G Olsen & D Rowley,

D Searle & T Coulton beat M Leach & J White, A Rumsby & D Turner lost to S Hughes & C Entacott.

* Bognor's ladies' section are proud of the fact divisions one, two and three all qualified for the quarter-finals of the Sussex Ladies' Golf Association seven-a-side matchplay tournament.

Divisions one and three have progressed to the semi-finals, due to be played on August 13 at East Brighton Golf Club.

Bognor ladies held a captains' prize medal competition. The captain's prize was won by J Ostrom with nett 66 on countback.

Results: Silver: 1 J Doughty nett 70 (ocb), 2 H Tidy 70. Bronze A: 1 K Dady 66, 2 L Searle 73. Bronze B: 1 J Birkett 73, 2 G McCormack 75 (ocb). Veterans: 1 B Payne 77 (ocb), 2 P Upton 77.
