Tourists come undone at the Felpham Oval
Action involving Aldwick, Tillington, Lavant, Kirdford and Singleton features in our latest local cricket round-up.
Aldwick v Woolston
In a break from the league, Aldwick welcomed Oxford touring side Wooton & Boars Hill to the Felpham Oval.
Consistent run-making from the Aldwick top order resulted in a final total of 244 for five.
Top scorer was Ian Demers (66 not out), followed by Keelan Belcher with 47, Arthur Bradbury (32) and Adam Rutter (31). Demers and Matt Robinson (29) put on 92 for the fourth wicket.
The tourists made a respectable 198 all out as Callum Edwards took four for 17 from seven overs.
On his debut, A Cake also bowled well and was unlucky not to take any wickets. Charlie LaForet continued with his good form taking two for nine from five overs as Aldwick won by 46 runs.
Eastergate v Aldwick
Aldwick finally fulfilled their Invitation League Cup fixture against Eastergate.
The home side batted first and made a great start, with openers B Elliott (41) and M Robson (60) putting on 112 for the first wicket.
Elliott was run out and Phil Hart bowled Robson. Through a good all-round bowling performance, Aldwick restricted Eastergate to 207.
Hart finished with two for 49, Andy Atkins two for 34 and Belcher brothers Nathan (1-22) and Keelan (1-21) kept it tight.
Skipper Joel Lodge (27) opened with Phil Hart (20) but both fell after good starts.
Keelan Belcher top-scored with 39, but the Aldwick chase faded and they finished on 151.
A White (2-28), C Abraham (3-25) and G Pusen (2-12) bowled well for Eastergate.
Aldwick v Simmons
Another touring side – Simmons from Leighton Buzzard – visited Aldwick on Sunday.
Simmons made 245 for six from 40 overs. Top scorer was A Lightfoot (95 not out), while opener M Gear struck 48.
Pick of the Aldwick bowlers were Richard Galvin (2-29), Ryan Hicks (1-44) and Charlie LaForet (2-47).
But the bowling highlight of the day was 11-year old Lewis Paul taking a wicket with his second ball in senior cricket.
Another highlight was the catch of the year so far by Andy Weir, whose full-length dive dismissed T Gear (4).
Aldwick were in disarray at nine for five but Chris Barrett (75no) joined Chris Redman (33no) to add respectability to the total, putting on 128.
Aldwick still lost the game, but it could have been worse.
Tillington Tornados v Russell's Rockets
The traditional match between Tillington and their vice-captain's XI was played as a Twenty20 game – and there was a 95-run victory for Tillington.
The Tornados went off at ten an over for the first six overs.
Mandatory retirements after reaching 25 came from Clark, Westmore, Darren Hodd and Rix as they reached 179 for six.
Murray chipped in with 15 and Germaney ten. The only wicket-taking bowlers were Simac and Dominic Groves.
Russell's Rockets did not get off to a good start as Darren Hodd removed both openers cheaply.
Graham Pooley (18), Medhurst (14) and Noakes (11) were the only batsmen to reach double figures and the Rockets faded.
Ford (2-8), Darren Hodd (2-11) and Germaney (2-17) did the damage with Hill, Clark and Rix getting a wicket each.
Ashley Groves was not out in a total of 84 off 14 overs.
Lavant v Portsmouth NALGO
A John Newman masterclass in flight and guile produced a tight drawn finish.
Lavant compiled a moderate 139 all out, a composed 43 from Smyth backed well by Stevens and Robin Burford.
Feast (4-24) and M Marshall (3-15) were the pick of the bowlers, with Marshall pulling off a superb running catch in the deep to dismiss Lavant debutant Williams.
Middleton and Bristow set about the chase purposefully and NALGO were cruising.
But Middleton dragged one on to his stumps for 42 and veteran Newman (10-5-15-4), in tandem with wily Banks, put the outcome in the balance as NALGO lost six more wickets for 28. NALGO finished nine short on 130 for seven.
Kirdford v Graffham
Kirdford fell agonisingly short of their first win of the season as they slipped to an 18-run defeat.
Graffham got off to a great start before faltering.
George Hardie picked up middle-order wickets, but skipper Fourie
smashed 56 to help his team reach 142 all out.
Hardie finished with four for 40 from 11.2 overs. Kirdford were 15 for five, but Jeffery put on 43 with Cookson (16).
Barratt wrapped up a five-wicket haul as Kirdford were bowled out for 124.
Singleton v Madehurst
Opener Jack Davies and his father Martin took the score to 36 before Kabfel (4-24) bowled the younger Davies.
A flurry of wickets followed and Singleton were 72 for eight when Freya Davies (13*) joined Chris Perry. They added 61, but Singleton managed only 138.
Hall and Ward bowled well and Madehurst lost wickets regularly, but were left needing eight off two overs.
Robinson bowled it well, and they needed four off Nin Williams' final over – they got only three and it was a tie.
