Young stars jump for joy at trampolining success
Three local schools made it to the second round of the BSGA-sponsored British schools trampoline competition after competing in the south-east regional leg at Burgess Hill.
The successful entrants, all trained by coaches at the Dragon Flyers Trampoline Club, represented Rose Green Junior, BRCC and Bishop Luffa.
They will compete in the southern zonal stage, also at Burgess Hill, on January 17.
Five of the eight entrants from Rose Green captured a medal and a place in the next round.
Bronze went to nine-year-old James Porter in the under-11 boys' novice.
This will be the second year James has qualified for the zonal leg and he hopes to match, if not better, his fifth place in last year's finals.
Younger club and school-mate Max Carter's first outing at a major event brought him a very respectable 11th place among 22 boys, many with a three-year age advantage.
With more than 40 entries in the under-11 girls' novice, there were no individual medals for local youngsters, but ten-year-old Megan Porter did Rose Green proud in 15th place as she recovered from injury.
Little Alice Chapman, a fellow Dragon Flyer from St Mary's CE Primary, aged only six, showed her potential by beating half the girls in that group, some nearly twice her age.
More medals went to Rose Green when their under-11 girls' elite team picked up the silver trophy after Melissa Bailey, Megan Bricknell, Sophie Elliot and Katie Neal delivered consistently-good performances.
BRCC's under-19B novice team, including Lee Burgess, Matt Harris, Jamie Smith and Craig Swadling, walked away with a team gold, while Harris also collected a well-deserved individual second-place trophy.
Swadling was only 0.6 points away from an individual medal, coming fourth in the individual scores.
There were no medals for the BRCC girls this year but impressive routines from Emily Hawes and Natalie Pullen (under-13G novice) put them in the top 20 per cent of a huge group of 100-plus entrants.
Finally, competing at the awesome standard of the under-19 girls' elite, Paige Hastings, Megan Grubb and Nicola Rogers were delighted to take the silver team trophy back to Bishop Luffa, securing their place in the next round.
The head coach at the Dragon Flyers, Linda O'Leary, who supported more than 30 youngsters at the event, had even more to smile about.
Another of her squad, Natasha Morgan from Portsmouth Grammar, also qualified for the zonal finals via the southern region leg. She picked up third place in the under-13 girls' novice while matching the scores of both first and second place.
With a third of the club's entrants qualifying for the next round, it should be an exciting day for both the Flyers and schools.
