AN ‘exciting’ new programme of events has been revealed by a museum as it looks forward to its first birthday.
The Novium, in Chichester, has unveiled some unusual themes for its events this year, including sandwich spread, mosaics and Roman comic strips.
Highlights of the new January to April programme include:
Hurrah for Shippams – a film archives afternoon on Friday, January 25, from 2pm to 4pm, exploring the story of the local business that became a national success. Tickets are £5 for adults, £4 for concessions.
Toga Tales for Under 5s – an interactive story-telling session for children under five featuring heroic tales from the Roman times. Free with museum admission.
Roman Comic Strips – a family ‘crafternoon’ on Saturday, January 26, from 1pm to 4pm, including interactive storytelling and a chance to design your own Roman comic strip. Free with museum admission.
Mosaic Mania! – a children’s workshop on Sunday, February 17, from 1pm to 3pm, where children can make a ceramic mosaic mirror frame to take home. Tickets are £2.50 per child.
Other upcoming events include a lecture series in March on bones by three leading UK experts. They include ground-breaking research on archaeological remains found in the district and are entitled The Autopsy of Bones, From Cemetery to Clinic, and Sex and the Saxons – early evidence of syphilis.
A Hands on History event has also been organised for half term, from February 16 to 24, with the chance to get up close to both real and replica artefacts.
A special Woolly Week of Sheep has been organised over the Easter holidays including trails, demonstrations, talks, walks, fancy dress and fun challenges.
As part of the adult learning programme, The Novium has a series of walking tours and talks highlighting aspects of Chichester’s history.
Content varies from broad introductions to the museum’s collection to focusing on specific objects and historical events.
Cllr Eileen Lintill, Chichester District Council’s member for leisure, wellbeing and community services, said: “The Novium has been open for six months now and, young or old, whatever you love about the Chichester District, the museum has something for you!
“Throughout the winter and into spring, there are lots of activities, events and talks for all ages.
“Our new events programme offers something for everyone.”
The museum service at The Novium, in Tower Street, Chichester, is open Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, and Sunday 10am to 4pm, November to March.
April to October opening hours are Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm.
