FESTIVAL OF CHICHESTER: City poet Sam returns

Born and educated in Chichester, but now living and working in the Far East, Sam Meekings returns to his home city for the launch of a new poetry pamphlet, The Other Shore.

Sam has published two novels dealing with the worlds of ancient and modern China, his stories slipping across different times and mythologies, from Maoist China to tales of the old gods. Under Fishbone Clouds and The Book of Crows present his take on life in different cultures.

Sam is currently working as a writing lecturer at Doha in Qatar.

British audiences will get a rare opportunity to hear Sam reading his new poetry and discussing his work at the Chichester Inn, West Street, Chichester at 7.30pm on Sunday, July 17th,. The entrance fee of £3.50 is discountable against the purchase of Sam’s new book.

The Other Shore (Eyewear Press) is a book of poems about the voices the dead use to speak with us, Sam explains. His previous collection, The Bestiary, was praised by critics and nominated for an Eric Gregory Award.

Sam was educated at Bishop Luffa School, Chichester, before going on to read English and History at Mansfield College, Oxford. From there he moved to China to pursue his career in books and writing.

The reading will be followed by an open mic when local poets get the chance to read their latest work in any style and on any subject.
