FAMILIES lined the streets today (Sunday, August 25) to watch the Selsey Carnival Procession.

Jacqui Phillips, one of the organisers of the event, said: “Everyone supports us very well and they all seem to enjoy it so that is why we keep doing it.”

Overall winners of the procession competition were Bognor-based pom-pom troupe, the Wondergirls.

“We love this event,” said manager Debbie Marsh. “We are here every year.”

One of the judges, and also in the procession, was Selsey Carnival Queen Shannon McCarthy.

To claim her throne, Shannon had to write no more than 50 words on why she thought she should be queen.

“I have been watching the carnival since I was little and I have always wanted to do it,” said the 14-year-old Selsey Academy pupil.

“I had to go out and get a lovely dress and it is great fun.”

The fun will continue tonight with a fireworks display, starting at around 8.30pm on the recreation ground off School Lane, Selsey.

A picture special, with more quotes and category winners, will be in this week’s Observer (Thursday, August 29) edition.
