A FOX may have been deliberately poisoned, an animal rescue officer fears.
Billy Elliott from WADARS was called to St John's Close, Goring, after a woman noticed the vixen in her garden.
Billy found the fox was having a fit but before he could get her to a vets, she died.
Billy said: "I can't be sure, and I hope it isn't the case, but the vet said after looking at the fox that it might have been deliberately poisoned by someone.
"Foxes are classed as vermin, and some people find them a pest, but they cannot take matters into their own hands as it is against the law."
He urged people to seek advice on humane ways to get rid of them.
Billy believes the vixen had several cubs as she was producing milk, and he feared for their safety.
He asked Goring residents to call if they found stray cubs.
Residents trying to stop foxes coming into their gardens by putting traps in fox holes have caused another problem – young cubs getting lost.
Billy has picked up at least four cubs from across Worthing, most recently a four-week-old in Tarring High Street.
