Worthing's top 10 most-read news stories in June

IT has been a busy month on the Worthing Herald's website, with more than double the number of people reading the stories and community information available online, compared with June 2007.
The top 10 most-popular stories has a mix of serious and light-hearted news.

1. Worthing's Norwich Union office to close - 660 job losses

When Norwich Union announced it was down-sizing its business nationally, the axe fell on employees based at The Warren, Worthing.

The Herald broke the news as soon as it became clear Worthing would be affected. The breaking news story was the most-viewed in June.

The second most viewed story was the video from the site, with interviews with employees.

Numerous other stories relating to Norwich Union followed, and will continue to be published by the Herald as the situation unfolds.

2. One person injured in Worthing seafront blaze - with video

A flat fire at Heene Terrace, which resulted in a man being taken to hospital, attracted crowds of on-lookers as firefighters fought the flames.

Herald reporters Katherine McGlinchey and Sarah Dale were at the scene to film the video report seen by thousands of people on the web.

3. Armed police seal off Worthing street

There was drama in Anscombe Close, Worthing, when armed police responded to a domestic dispute.

A man was arrested.

4. GALLERY: Night to Remember

St Barnabas House hospice's first Night to Remember sponsored walk was a great hit.

On midsummer night, 1,000 women walked a 13-mile route through Worthing and Lancing, starting and finishing at Worthing Leisure Centre, in Durrington.

The event raised around £250,000 for the charity.

5. Bloody attack closes part of Worthing shopping precinct

Police sealed off part of Montague Street after a bloody attack.

A man was hospitalised and his mother told the Herald how lucky he was to be alive.

6. GALLERY: Durrington High School prom 2008

Those Durrington High School pupils know how to enjoy themselves, and they certainly dressed to impress for their leavers' prom.

The prom took place on June 26, but it was such a hit with thousands of students and their friends, it reached the top 10 just four days after going online.

7. VIDEO: 700 runners in Worthing 10k race

Atheletes took over the prom as hundreds took part in the Worthing 10k race, and were filmed by the Herald.

Worthing runner, 23-year-old Ed O'Brien won the 10k race by the narrowist of margins.

8 VIDEO: Durrington's big day - all the fun of the festival

A great time was had by all at Durrington Festival's Big Day.

The Herald's video proved the most-popular online coverage of the event, with the picture gallery coming a close "second".

9 VOTE: New wardens patrolling Worthing shops and businesses – with video

Five new "shop wardens" have been employed by Worthing Town Centre Initiative's Shopwatch in a bid to deter and reduce town centre crime.

Readers were asked: Do you think the new shop wardens will help reduce crime in Worthing town centre?

In the online vote 26 per cent of readers responding chose "yes", with 74 per cent deciding "no".

10 Parents and staff stunned as historic Worthing school closes

Parents were shocked when they were given five-weeks notice to find their children a new school when the trustees announced that Sandhurst School is closing.

The school opened 101 years ago, and closes on Thursday, July 10.
