IT looks set to be a happy Christmas for abandoned puppy Ruby, after more than a dozen people came forward to offer her a home.
The young animal's sad story was featured in last week's Herald, and Billy Elliott of animal charity WADARS said he has been thrilled with the response.
He has received calls from more than 12 people wanting to give the five-month-old lurcher-type dog a place to live – and she is on target to be with a new owner by Christmas.
Billy, senior animal rescue officer, said: "We have been delighted by the response. It's better than I expected.
"Considering the discomfort and distress she must have been in, her temperament is great. She seems happy to play with other dogs and seems very friendly towards people, so I think the future looks good for her."
Ruby was found roaming the streets of Sompting around two weeks ago. She was suffering from a severe case of skin disease mange, and Billy said had she been left much longer, she could have died.
It is though she was dumped by her owner, who may not have been able to afford the cost of treating the sick puppy.
Since Ruby has been in WADARS' care she has put on more than a kilo in weight, and her red-raw and itchy skin is beginning to heal.
She has been receiving medical attention at Northdale Vets in Victoria Road, Worthing, including special baths to help treat the skin condition.
Anyone who is interested in donating money towards Ruby's care, offering another animal a home, or who needs help from WADARS should call 01903 217788.
