New waste site shock
Broadbridge Farm, Ashington, has been earmarked as a potential area for a new 'open composting' facility, involving a potential new access from the A24 and an estimated 60,000 tonnes of compostable waste from brown-topped bins being deposited there every year.
The news has come immediately after a petition was handed in to the county council in Chichester on Friday, opposing a waste landfill site at Laybrook brickworks, between Ashington and Thakeham, and also follows a three-year battle by nearby Washington village which succeeded in preventing a waste tip at Rock Common, south of Ashington.

The company which would be running the scheme is Olus Environmental Ltd, which manages green waste from its base at Winterpick Business Park in Hurstpierpoint Road, Wineham, close to the A23.
