Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Captain Tom Moore pay tribute to Dame Vera Lynn

These were the words of Prime Minister Boris Johnson who paid tribute to the Forces’ Sweetheart today after hearing the news of her death.
He added on Twitter: “Her voice will live on to lift the hearts of generations to come.”

Hide AdCaptain Sir Tom Moore, who won the hearts of the nation after walking 100 laps of his garden to raise money for the NHS amid the coronavirus pandemic, said Dame Vera had a ‘huge impact on him’.
The 100-year-old veteran, who has raised more than £32million for NHS charities and was knighted last month, added: “A real shame, I really thought Vera Lynn would live longer she’s been speaking so well on TV recently.
“She had a huge impact on me in Burma and remained important to me throughout my life. My thoughts are with Dame Vera Lynn’s family at this sad time.”

Hide AdThe British Army also paid tribute to Dame Vera on Twitter: “Today with the sad passing of Dame Vera Lynn, we have lost our Sweetheart. But We Know We’ll Meet Again... Rest in Peace Dame Vera from all in your Army.”

Hide AdThe Royal British Legion said it was incredibly sad to hear of her death, describing her as a ‘symbol of hope to the Armed Forces Community past and present, and much loved longstanding Legion supporter.
It added: “Our thoughts are with her loved ones.”
The Royal Air Force said Dame Vera’s voice inspired the nation for over 80 years, bringing hope in our darkest moments, adding: “We join with people across the country to offer our condolences to her family & friends at this sad time & remember her decades of friendship to the RAF.”
The Royal Albert Hall, where Dame Vera Lynn performed more than 50 times, said: “Rest in peace Dame Vera Lynn. A hugely important figure in British culture throughout our nation’s toughest times. You will long be remembered by millions. Thank you.”
