BRIGHTON FESTIVAL: Light and Shadow

All Saints' Church has played host to some remarkable performances over the years but surely none can be so deeply moving as Vox Luminis' evening '˜Light and Shadow'.

The premise is a simple one; to take music written when light was a precious commodity and in short supply and to sing it as darkness falls over a spring evening.

The music was sublime and perfectly filled the lengthening shadows of the church.

Thomas Tallis’ “O nata Lux” (oh light born of light) was sung from the altar to the left of the audience and Vox Luminis cleverly used the space of the church to give the music a new depth and resonance.

Sections of the consort spoke and answered each other from the nave and transept. William Byrd’s “ Ave verum corpus” (Hail true body) worked particularly well in that respect.

The audience was entranced throughout and rightly gave the singers a tremendous reception at the end of a magical evening
