“To limn” means to paint “in little”.

Spokesman Richard East said: “This year’s exhibition is the 19th to be held at Chichester. Around 250 miniature paintings will be on display featuring portraits, birds, animals, flowers, landscapes, still life, silhouettes, calligraphy and many other subjects. Many Sussex artists, plus others from the rest of the UK, Germany and Australia, are exhibiting and selling work in the exhibition.

“Paintings by 45 members of the Society of Limners will be in the exhibition, which is open to members of the society who range from amateurs who paint solely for enjoyment to internationally-known professional artists such as Pauline Denyer-Baker, Eric Kincaid and Bill Mundy. Six new members of the society, the largest number for many years, will be exhibiting for the first time.

“This free admission exhibition is open from 10am to 4.30pm, and last year attracted around 1,500 visitors. Most of the works on show will be for sale at prices from £75.”

Nicholas Hilliard, court painter to Elizabeth I, was one of the best known limners of all time.

n The annual Treve Cottage Art Show is back for 2016, open daily from July 16-31, 11am to 6pm.

Organiser Bronwen Cunningham said: “There will be more exhibitors, more space than ever before. The tumbledown old wooden garage has morphed into a posh new workroom so what began as a small family show 15 years ago, with a memorial exhibition of my husband’s prints in his studio, has turned into a much larger and more varied show today. The Cunninghams still showing their work, but lots of others too.

“There’s paintings, sculpture, prints, weaving, woodcarving, leatherwork, ceramics, drawings, jewellery and glass artworks, all spread over the house, studio, marquee and garden

“Tom Barker, trained at St Martins and interested in the beautiful and the weird, is showing his most unusual digital collages. Sheila Pearson, former head of fashion at Winchester Art College, shows enticing, vividly-patterned little purses, bags and belts out of very fine leather. Very tempting!

“Local artist Karen Grimstead brings her luminous, fused and slumped glass artworks; Isabelle Bowden shows little mirrors and still lives of favourite subjects; Mick Waterhouse will be here again chipping away and showing his wonderful woodcarvings: another favourite, Wendy Farley, shows her hand-built and burnished and smoke-fired elegant pots. Kate Boxer’s work, currently on show at Glyndebourne, is always surprising, bold and witty etchings of famous human and animal subjects.”
