FILM: Blood in the Mobile (cert TBC)

As recent news reports attest, mobile phones are one of the most desirable gadgets of the modern age.

Documentary film-maker Frank Piasecki Poulsen examines a devastating side-effect of this consumer demand in his harrowing film, which travels to the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where the mines are rich in minerals used to produce mobile phones.

These so-called conflict minerals are financing the civil war in the country that has, according to human rights organisations, resulted in the deaths of more than five million people.

With no apparent end to the slaughter and phone companies unable to guarantee that their suppliers aren’t buying conflict minerals from the Congo, film-maker Poulsen hopes to prick consciences and compel us to put human lives ahead of material desires.
