Hambrook teenager Anna Foye and Chichester-based indie folk duo Cynosure were among the select few who made it through from the southern area finals at Fareham’s Ferneham Hall.

“More than 9,000 people entered this year’s competition. Now just 25 or so remain in each of the three age categories (under-16, 16-19 and 20 and over) for the grand final in Birmingham on January 24

Anna, one of the Chichester Music Academy students who helped launch this year’s Festival of Chichester on the Cathedral Green this summer, wowed the judges at the regional final with one of her own songs in the under-16s category.

Anna, 13, said: “I am so pleased. I just did my best, and I guess it paid off. I was really nervous, but I took all the nervousness in me and put it into how the song meant to me and gave it my best.”

For the Birmingham grand final: “I am going to take a few days to calm myself down and then maybe write a new song. I like to do originals for most of the things I do. When you have got an original, people are so drawn into what you are doing, wondering what is coming next.

“I love music. I do music all the time. It just means everything to me. Hopefully I can do a lot more in the future. I am not really good at much else! It just helps me express my feelings.”
