Worthing date as Sandi Thom releases new single

Sandi Thom performs at Worthing’s Connaught Theatre on Saturday, November 14, the day after her new single Earthquake is released.

It’s a song which describes the shattering experience of her sad and sudden split from Joe Bonamassa in 2014. Bonamassa moved out. In the song, Sandi recalls the empty house and how she felt as if she had been hit by an emotional earthquake, standing in the aftermath of their relationship.

Happily she now finds herself in a hugely-happier position. She’s just moved to Essex with her new husband and is expecting a baby at the end of the first week of March next year.

Things couldn’t possibly be more different from the situation Earthquake evokes so strikingly.

“I am fine now. With the pregnancy, I went through the things most women go through in the first three or four months, the fatigue and so on. I am certainly very pregnant now!”

And with the new album coming out next March as well, it all caps a great year: “I made a little pact with myself at the beginning of this year. You never think it is going to happen, but I was going to make an album, meet the man of my dreams and have a baby. That’s what I wanted especially as the year before had been the best. And then I met my husband on the day before New Year’s Eve last year… and all my dreams came true.”

So doesn’t that make singing about the previous year’s heartbreak feel rather strange?

“The feeling is long gone, but at the time it was very much there and very present, and I think it’s great. You write your best stuff when you have your lowest moments. You draw on your own experiences, and the more the situations move you, the more it affects you, the better you write. It was a huge life-changing thing for me, but anyone can relate to it, the feeling that you have been with someone for five or so years and you are feeling pretty settled and then everything turns itself completely on its head.

“I don’t need to write to understand what happened. I understood what happened, but I think it gives you inspiration. You have got all these intense emotions and feelings, and writing is just a natural outlet for me, just a natural thing for me to do. I am sure other people have other ways of dealing with it, but what I can say is that I could not have written that song if I had not gone through the whole ordeal.”

And so, nine years after her debut album Smile…It Confuses People and the hit single I Wish Was A Punk Rocker both raced to the top of the UK charts, she’s back – and on great form: “Weapons of Past Destruction is the first album I’ve produced,” says Sandi. “It’s about picking up the pieces and starting all over again in the aftermath of an emotional disaster. The songs are about war, death, destruction, anger, courage and hope as well as reconciling with the past and moving on. I don’t pretend to have a hard life. I’m not living through a war. I don’t know that kind of pain and suffering but in my own small way, like everyone in life, I have had to face that moment when the rug gets pulled out from under your feet and you’re left standing there with a broken heart.”
