All the places in Chichester and Bognor Regis which will have to close during second lockdown

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the new national lockdown at the weekend as Covid-19 cases continue to rise at a concerning rate.

It will take place from November 5 until December 2 and people are being asked to stay at home unless for specific purposes – such as childcare, exercise, buying food, or if you cannot work from home.

Below are all the businesses, venues, and other public facilities which will be closing from Thursday.

‘Non-essential shops’

This includes clothing shops, electronics shops, vehicle showrooms, travel agents, betting shops, car washes, and vape shops.

All businesses which are considered ‘non-essential’ must close from Thursday.

Pubs, bars and restaurants

Pubs, bars and restaurants will have to close, but can still provide takeaway and delivery food and drink, excluding alcohol.

A spokesperson for Wildwood, which has a restaurant in Chichester, said: "The safety of our community, our teams and our customers are what matters most and we want to assure you that we are taking the necessary measures to protect and safeguard our takeaway and delivery team so that you can still enjoy our food & drink.

"We promise to open our restaurants as soon as Boris says it’s safe to do so, in the meantime please enjoy all of your favourites and our festive offering delivered to your home."

Gyms and leisure centres

Leisure facilities must close – including gyms, swimming pools, golf courses and dance studios.

Butlin's, which has a resort in Bognor, announced on Saturday that it would 'sadly be closing' from today (Monday, November 2) until Thursday, December 3.

A spokesperson said: "If you’re due to arrive with us on November 2, please do not travel. We know this will be disappointing and we’re here to make the process as easy as possible for you."

Everyone Active, which runs Westgate Leisure Centre, Chichester, Bourne Leisure Centre in Southbourne and The Grange in Midhurst, posted: “As per the latest Government announcement, we will unfortunately close from Thursday, November 5, we look forward to seeing you back hopefully from Wednesday, December 2.”

Entertainment

Entertainment venues including cinemas, museums, galleries bingo halls and zoos must also shut up shop.

Chichester Festival Theatre has vowed to be ready for an instant comeback the moment it can reopen following the second national lockdown.

Crave, which had been performed to audiences at the theatre this week will now be staged behind closed doors and live streamed until Saturday.

The Novium Museum and Chichester Tourism Information Centre is among those temporarily closed until December 2.

The trustees of the Haslemere Educational Museum have announced that it will close to the general public from Thursday. The museum intends to reopen on Friday, December 4, for weekend opening, ‘subject to the lockdown rules being lifted and not extended’.

A spokesperson said: “The museum trustees and management team apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but the government measures must be followed to protect the public as well as museum staff and volunteers from the coronavirus.

“A notice will be made as soon as possible to announce the re-opening of the museum and resumption of operations at the appropriate time.”

Hairdressers and beauty salons

Hairdressers, beauty and nail salons, tattoo and piercing parlours, spas and tanning salons must also close from Thursday.

Libraries

During the first lockdown in March, all libraries had to close to the public.

However, West Sussex County Council has said that all its libraries are currently waiting to receive guidance from central government on what services they may be allowed to offer during this second lockdown. For the latest information, you can sign up to the West Sussex libraries e-newsletter.

Weddings and funerals?

Funerals can be attended by a maximum of 30 people but weddings are not permitted. Churches and other places of worship will close unless they are being used for a funeral or other specific reasons specified by the government.

Hotels and holiday accommodation

Holiday parks, hotels and B&Bs will also have to close for this four-week period, as overnight stays and holidays are not allowed.

But what can stay open?

Food shops, supermarkets, and garden centres are allowed to remain open, following covid-secure guidelines.

Retail which is considered non-essential can remain open for delivery to customers and click-and-collect.

Schools and universities can also remain open.

Public spaces like parks, playgrounds, public gardens, and the beach remain open.
