The Co-op store in Petworth has been through huge amount of changes over the decades and some of its walls have been standing for over 400 years, a spokesman said.

The store has seen many changes of ownership, from Otways in the 1800s to Co-op in the present day.

There has always been a need for a larger convenience store in Petworth and after approximately eight years of planning and organising, the store is almost ready to launch, the spokesman confirmed.

HB projects, Co-op’s main contractor, have been heading the renovation.

The Co-op spokesman said: “They have had to some face some difficult challenges over this past year.

“Whilst extending and restoring the building, they’ve also been preserving the heritage and integrity of the store.

“They’ve also had the added complications of having to temporarily stop work due to the coronavirus pandemic.”

The store has had up to £2 million spent through the renovation so far and is nearly finished.

“The store is also Coop’s most heavily invested shop and most anticipated store opening of the year,” said the spokesman.

“The store will benefit from an extended chilled and Ambient range, cash machine, Costa coffee and new refrigeration, whilst also bringing back old favourites like the Instore Bakery and National Lottery.

“The team look forward to serving all our loyal and new customers very soon.”
