The market, which will be held in North Street and East Street every Wednesday, is set to begin its trial from Wednesday, August 17.

The new market aims to complement the historic city and will be made up of blue and white matching gazebo style stalls, creating a more artisan look and feel.

The new market will be managed by Ritagate Ltd (trading as Bray Associates) which has been selected by the council as the market operator.

Brian Nunan, director of Bray Associates, said: “We are very pleased to have been selected by Chichester District Council and we are looking forward to launching this new market in Chichester city centre.

“We believe the new market will offer something different to shoppers and complement the city’s current offer, with a range of foods and other goods.”

It is hoped that the trial will help increase footfall to the city centre and improve the market, which has been experiencing a decline in its present location.

The existing traders market will continue to operate in the Cattle Market car park every Saturday.

Councillor Gillian Keegan, cabinet member for commercial services at Chichester District Council, said: “We are very much looking forward to the market starting later this month.

“We want the market to be a real success but we have also used this as an opportunity to start from scratch and look at what is right for our city.”

She continued: “We have been working closely with the Chichester BID (Business Improvement District) and other partners to introduce high quality controls and high standards to fit within the city’s historic environment and that reflect its character. “We are keen for it to benefit residents, the city and local businesses.

“We also want Chichester to remain vibrant and attractive and encourage more visitors.”

Green party city councillor, Sarah Sharp – who previously spoke out with fears for the traders – said: “A big concern we had before is ensuring that everybody works together and makes the traders’ move as smooth as possible.

“Now that it is going forward I hope that everybody is going to work well together and make sure the traders are looked after.”

The market will be closely monitored by the council and a review will take place in six months’ time.
