Chef Sergio Terrasini created afternoon tea for the residents, featuring mille-feuille and birthday cake.

Avallon McCormack, home manager, said: “We had a great afternoon celebrating our first birthday. We’ve been coming up with lots of creative ways to keep busy during the lockdown and have been overwhelmed by the support from our local community.

“Just this week the Hilton hotel at Avisford Park gave us wine and cleaning products, which was so generous. We thank them and everyone for their support.

“Staff are doing everything they can to make the most out of life in our home and it has reminded us what a great team we have at Walberton Place, who continue to go above and beyond for residents every day.”

In line with government guidelines, the care home is currently closed to visitors but the Walberton Place Facebook page has been used to show families what their loved ones have been doing, with lots of photos and videos shared each week.

Country Court, which owns the care home, has provided a tablet so residents can share video calls with relatives, as well as receiving phone calls, cards and letters.

Postcards have been sent by children at Walberton and Binsted CE Primary School to cheer everyone up and some residents have even been enjoying flying a Spitfire, using a virtual reality headset.

There is usually a wide range of visitors, including musicians and entertainers, so during the lockdown, Country Court is running a UK-wide campaign to ask people to send in videos of themselves, or their children, singing or playing musical instruments.

The videos will be collated and shared with all their care homes. To take part, use WhatsApp and message 07872542369.
