Lockdown rules and algorithms have controlled students’ lives until today, when they finally received their GCSE grades and were able to make decisions about their own futures.

Head Teacher Austen Hindman said: "This year group have shown incredible resilience. It feels as though they have finally been allowed to be in control of their own lives again, and we are looking forward to seeing many of them back with us at the beginning of September as the school reopens.

"We are pleased to be welcoming a record number of external applicants to our Sixth Form. It was wonderful meeting lots of new people today and hearing how excited they are to be able to carry on with their education. I doubt that any of them will ever take school for granted again."

For many, the grades were confirmation that their hard work throughout their time at school had paid off. While there was not the sense of relief or disappointment that you get from finding out how an exam really went, most students seemed pleased to be able to return to school and catch-up with staff and other students, a school spokesman said:

The spokesman said: "The question that anxious parents were asking was ‘did you get what you need?’ This was particularly true for students looking to study Arts courses next year.

"There are very few colleges still offering A Levels in music and dance, so the school was very pleased that so many students will be studying A Levels in these subjects, including: Jareth Ganjo, whose ambition is to be a film composer; Steven Hughes, who would like to be a performer in musical theatre; Lucy Keeping, who would like to become a dance teacher; Richard Chapman, who is studying dance and drama A Levels at Bishop Luffa so that he can pursue his dream of becoming a professional actor."
