Mosaic designed by Arundel pupils to reflect school values

Pupils at Arundel Church of England Primary School have created a mosaic to reflect the school values and Vision Statement.

Artist Rosie Hewitt and many parents, including Kelly Lee, worked with the children to create a mosaic representing the school Vision Statement, ‘Love of God, Love of Neighbour, Love of Learning’.

Val Williams, school business manager, said: “Every child from reception to year six joined Rosie to place some tiles in the mosaics.

“The older pupils also learned how to cut the tiles. Governors, parents and members of the Arundel community also placed some tiles.

“The mosaic is now on the wall in our school entrance for all pupils, staff and visitors to see. The children are very proud to see their work on display and know which pieces they contributed to.”

Rosie, an award-winning artist based in Walberton, ensured many of the children’s own drawings were incorporated into the design, made from vibrantly-coloured, reflective glass.

The designs were a result of a whole school community competition to complete an image that represents the school’s vision statement.

More than 200 children were involved in the project, which lasted for many weeks, and the results will stand the test of time and will be seen by present and future generations.

Head teacher Andrew Simpson said: “It’s so rewarding to immerse children creatively. There’s no age barrier to the spectacular outcomes even the youngest children can achieve.

“The whole mosaic experience captures their imagination and the pride and ownership they feel when they see the scale of their work revealed, is just wonderful.

“Rosie has been wonderful and it has been fabulous parents like Kelly have also been involved.”
