These are the words of The Academy, Selsey headteacher Tom Garfield in a statement made today (Thursday, August 20) as GCSE results are released for schools across the country.

Confusion over how students would be graded has hung over the long-awaited results day but Mr Garfield said the school's exam results reflects their hardwork.

Tom Garfield, headteacher of The Academy, Selsey, said:"We are pleased with the results overall but, what has mattered most this year is that our students have exam results that reflect their efforts over the previous two years.

"I am pleased that, eventually, our students have been awarded a fair set of exam results. In this extraordinary year, it is not appropriate to make comparisons with previous years or cite special individual performances, but to celebrate the performance of all of our pupils.

"In particular I would like to recognise the outstanding attainment of James Green, Tom Harriott and Savanah Hack and the exceptional progress made by Holly McQueen, William Johnson-Cadwell and Abi Bennett.

"I would also like to recognise the exceptional resilience that this group of young people have shown throughout. Not only have they had to contend with Covid but during the recovery from the fire they were nothing short of incredible.

"I am so sad for them that their exceptional time with us has ended as it has but they should be incredibly proud of what they have achieved, especially in these circumstances."
