Lego Technic McLaren Senna GTR and Ferrari 488 GTE race on to shelves

Lego has announced two new models in its expanding range of Technic supercars, with iconic models from McLaren and Ferrari recreated in brick form.

Smaller in scale and price than the massive Bugatti Chiron and Lamborghini Sian sets, the two are nonetheless detailed sets aimed at older builders.

The Lego Technic Ferrari 488 GTE is the first Lego Technic set to be designed with Ferrari and to carry the famous prancing horse badge.

Based on the famous AF Corse #51 endurance racer, the 1,677-piece set measures an impressive 48cm long and features working suspension, a moving V8 engine original race number and sponsor stickers and the authentic Tricolore colour scheme.

Priced at £169.99, the Technic Ferrari 488 GTE goes on sale on January 1, at the same time as the smaller but equally striking Technic McLaren Senna GTR.

Priced at £44.99, the McLaren set uses 830 pieces to recreate the track-going version of one of McLaren’s most extreme and controversial-looking cars.

Like the Ferrari, the Senna GTR is the first Technic kit developed with McLaren, although the P1, Senna and 720S have all previously been released as standard Lego kits.

The 32cm-long Technic Senna GTR features a moving replica of the car’s famous V8, working steering and opening dihedral doors - just like the real thing.

“Recreating a car that is so extreme to the core as the McLaren Senna GTR with LEGO Technic gave us an incredibly interesting challenge” said Uwe Wabra, senior designer for Lego Technic. “This track car is not like any road car I’ve worked on before. It’s got some unique details, like its silhouettes and the awesome rear spoiler, which differentiates the building experience from others. Just like the incredible engineers at McLaren do when designing their supercars, we really pushed things to the max so the resulting model perfectly honours the art form that is the McLaren Senna GTR.”
