In the track, Williams makes a reference to social distancing, singing, “Santa’s on his sleigh, but now he’s two metres away.”

The lyrics, which are set to a catchy tune featuring festive bells, include the lines, “You can’t take away our season, like you can’t take away the wine.”

Williams then goes onto sing, “The people gonna need something to believe in, after a year of being indoors,” with backing singers chiming in with, “You’ve got our wish list, you can’t stop Christmas.”

The song also includes the line, “‘Let’s lie to Santa Claus, tell him it’s 1984,” which could allude to George Orwell’s dystopian novel, 1984.

The track will feature on a new edition of Williams’ 2019 album, The Christmas Present, which features duets with Rod Stewart, Bryan Adams and others. The album, which was originally released last Christmas, gave the former Take That singer his 13th number one solo album.

What do the public think of Robbie Williams’ new Christmas song?

The singer’s new song has received a mixed response on social media, with some loving the festive track, and others unsure of the chosen topic.

One Twitter user said, “This makes me SMILE so much! Santa’s on his way & now he’s 2 metres away. Thanks for making a clever, funny Xmas song out of this crazy year!”

Another added, “Love the comedy lyrics you put in your songs no one does it better than you! another brilliant catchy Christmas tune to add to the collection.”

However, one tweeter posed the question of, “Wonder if this’ll get airtime on the main channels?”

Another simply said, “That should not be labelled music!”
