GARDENING: Garden history tours at Uppark

GARDEN history tours are now running at the National Trust's Uppark property at South Harting.

The loss of about 80 per cent of the garden’s mature trees in the storm of 1987 led to a review of the garden by the trust, and a programme of historical research began.

Elements of 19th century garden designer Humphry Repton’s work remained so it was decided to restore the garden in his ‘picturesque’ style.

The tours, every Thursday at 2pm, explain the development of the grounds and how they are cared for today.

The garden is maintained organically and all plants, including those for sale, are peat-free.

Normal house and garden admission prices apply.
