ROADWORKS between Chichester and Selsey have caused disruption on the roads.

Delays of one hour are being reported, after work on the B2145 at Sidlesham started this morning (February 28).

The work is expected to finish at 4.30pm tomorrow.

Lorraine Squires, from Granary Lane, Selsey said she couldn’t make it to Chichester this morning.

“How can they keep people in Selsey hostage? It was unfortunate there was an accident on the alternative route. But they haven’t put up a sign let us know apart from the one where the road is closed.

“All they have is a boy taking the flack from all the drivers trying to get through.”

Mrs Squires said the lorries were getting through because the alternative can’t take heavier loads.

A spokeswoman for West Sussex County Council, said: “The B2145 Selsey Road between Green Lane and Lockgate Road is currently closed to traffic for safety reasons. Works are ongoing to repair the carriageway to make it safe for road users.

“There is a diversion route in place for cars, however HGVs are to be walked through the site as the diversion is not suitable for heavy vehicles.

“Until the surface of the road is repaired it is unsafe for other vehicles to pass due to its condition as traffic may exacerbate the damage and cause further delays to the work.

“West Sussex Highways are doing all they can to repair this road and make it safe for drivers by the end of the day.”

UPDATE: West Sussex County Council has said it hopes to finish the roadworks tonight, but hasn’t said a specific time when the road will open.
