4Bs raise money for Sussex Snowdrop Trust

Charitable cyclists have used pedal power to raise stacks of cash for a local children's charity.

The 19 friends and business colleagues, otherwise known as the 4Bs – which stands for Bognor Builders, Businessmen and a Butcher – raised £22,069.20 for the Sussex Snowdrop Trust.

One of those who took part, Oliver Hicklin, said: “I don’t think we could have chosen a more amazing local charity to support.

“A few of us met Di, the trust’s chairman and co-founder, and she had us all in tears.

“We then took her to meet the rest of the lads and they all agreed this was the charity to support.”

He added: “Many of us are parents and appreciate what this fantastic charity does for local children and their families.

“We are mostly old school friends, colleagues and acquaintances who work and live in the Bognor area.

“There are so many people to thank: Di, all the local businesses which sponsored us, everyone who donated money, and importantly the four members of the logistics crew who were with us for the whole journey, providing food and drink every 20 miles.”

The cyclists had been meeting informally on Tuesday evenings for about two years, and took part in the Three Peaks run in 2009 and the Round the Island event last year. But the journey to Bruges was their most ambitious challenge to date.

They had hoped to raise £15,000 for the cause, but after realising they had smashed their target, Mr Hicklin decided to keep the final total a secret, until the cheque presentation.

Just as the cheque was being handed over at a special celebration, attended by some 250 people at the Waverley in Aldwick Road, another last-minute £50 donation was given.
