OBSERVER readers have continued to astound and delight us with their generosity by giving to the Help Tom Toddle campaign.

Since we shared the story of five-year-old Thomas Jenkinson, who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy, more than £800 in cheques has been sent to our offices, as well as a host of online donations.

Thomas’ family are trying to raise £40,000 to pay for a life-changing operation which they hope will allow him to move himself unaided and are now a quarter of the way there, having raised around £10,000.

Inspired by the generosity of our readers, the Observer team organised two fundraising events of our own last week.

On Wednesday afternoon, we took to the streets of Chichester with our collection buckets, thanks to the support of Chichester District Council.

On Thursday, we held a raffle at the Observer Community Awards at Butlin’s, Bognor Regis.

Combined, the events raised more than £500 for the campaign.

Thanks to the following businesses who donated prizes: Waitrose, Owen Electrical, Andrew McDowell, The Worx Hair and Beauty, Woods Travel, Rolls Royce, Carte Blanche, Fontwell, Best Western Beachcroft Hotel, Starbucks, Brasserie Blanc, Avisford Hotel, Hennings Wine Merchant, Pressleys etc, The Royal Oak and The Grand.

Deputy content editor Sheena Campbell said: “The reaction to Thomas has been truly heartwarming and I can only say ‘thank you’ to everyone who has helped so far.”
