Abbeyfield Chichester walks 60 miles to celebrate charity's 60th

Staff from Chichester walked 60 miles to celebrate the 60th birthday of the Abbeyfield Society.

The group from Abbeyfield’s sheltered accommodation and for the elderly set off from Eastbourne was welcomed in Chichester on Saturday by town crier Richard Plowman.

He heralded the group through the city centre to Chichester Cathedral.

There, they were greeted by Chichester mayor and mayoress Peter and Philippa Budge and a service of blessing was led by the Dean of Chichester.

Helen Sque, general manager, said: “Abbeyfield Chichester, which hosted and arranged this celebration event, was delighted that almost a 100 local dignitaries, actors, staff, residents and friends turned up to support the celebration.

“Abbeyfield’s determination to bring care, companionship and comfort to our often lonely elderly communities has spawned more than 500 houses and more than 9,000 residents since the first home was set up in 1956.”

A celebration tea was held at Abbeyfield’s nearby Westgate House property.

Abbeyfield Chichester is a small, personal, non-profit making company providing assisted accommodation for independent older people who no longer want the worries of running their own home.

It is allied to the highly-respected national group and holds the Gold Star of excellence but is totally independent.

Run by a board of trustees, the salaried key management team are assisted by a number of volunteers who help with social activities.

Abbeyfield Chichester has been delivering its services for more than 50 years.
