Amazon delivery lorry overturns on A27 - Video footage shows scene of major crash

Two people were taken to hospital after a major crash on the A27 near Chichester this morning (Friday, October 9).

According to Sussex Police, officers received reports of a lorry overturning, before being involved in a collision with a car at 5.40am. Keep up-to-date with the latest updates hereHampshire Fire and Rescue Service said the lorry, which was left 'stretched across the A27', was carrying 'hundreds of Amazon parcels' .

The lorry driver, a 62-year-old man, suffered a serious injury and was taken to hospital for treatment. Police said his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening or life-changing.

The car driver, a 50-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries.

South East Coast Ambulance Service said the two patients were assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to hospital.

A spokesperson said: "One patient was taken to St Richard’s Hospital and the second was taken to Southampton General."

Firefighters freed the driver of the HGV using 'small tools', while the driver of the car self-released prior to crews' arrival at the scene.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: "Joint Fire Control received a 999 call at 5.41am this morning following a road traffic collision on the A27 between Fishbourne and Warblington involving an HGV and a car.

“Crews from Chichester and Bognor Regis were mobilised to the scene along with Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service crews from Havant and Cosham.

“Crews worked quickly to help contain a diesel leak onto the carriageway using environmental packs.

“The A27 is currently closed in both directions between the Fishbourne Roundabout at Chichester and Warblington in Hampshire while the vehicle is recovered and is expected to remain closed in both directions for considerable time.

“Drivers are urged to avoid the area, as the parallel A259 between Warblington and Chichester is exceptionally busy.”

Police said the road is currently closed in both directions and disruption can be expected for a 'number of hours'. Diversions are in place.
